Enterprise ABM in Brazil: how to choose and approach target companies

By Luis Peixoto5 min read

Enterprise ABM trades volume for choice: the team picks a few companies and treats each one as a project. See how to apply the method when selling to large companies in Brazil.

What enterprise ABM is

Enterprise ABM is account-based marketing applied to selling to large companies. The team first chooses the companies it wants to win, then decides whom to approach at each one and what to say.

In the traditional funnel, marketing generates volume and sales filters. In ABM, the filter comes first, and every company on the list has a reason to be there.

The method pays off most with large deals, long cycles and decisions that cross several areas, which describes most enterprise selling.

What changes with ABM in Brazil

In Brazil, five points change the ABM plan.

  • Many large companies are several CNPJs (Brazilian company tax IDs) in the same business group, and the decision may sit at the holding company, far from the operation you are approaching.
  • Most large companies are privately held, and their numbers have to be estimated with care.
  • Referrals open doors that ads do not, and the plan maps who on your side knows whom on theirs.
  • WhatsApp is a work channel: at many companies, the conversation moves from email to the phone after the first contact.
  • LGPD, the Brazilian data protection law, governs personal data, and the plan defines where each contact comes from and on what legal basis it is used.

How to choose target companies by ICP

The list is the decision that weighs most in ABM. It starts from the ICP, the ideal customer profile: segment, size, region, operational complexity and signals of need.

Write the ICP as criteria you can check, such as "manufacturer with more than one plant, revenue above a defined threshold and operations in more than one state". With criteria like these, each company gets a score and the team knows where to start.

Choose by the ICP, not by the famous names in the segment. Since no team can give every company the same care, the list is split into three tiers.

TierHow many companiesWhat each one gets
One to oneA few, the highest fitFull research, power map, message and material written for the company
One to fewA group by segment or shared painMessage per group, adjusted to the company in the first touch
One to manyThe broad ICP listContent by segment and tracking of interest signals

The power map at each target company

At a large company, the decision goes through who signs, who uses, who assesses the risk and who has influence without the title. ABM depends on knowing who these people are at each company on the list.

The power map records each person's role in the purchase (economic decision maker, champion, influencer, entry point and user) and the relationships between them, by area and level. With it, the plan says whom to talk to and in what order.

The article on the power map in sales shows how to build and validate the map.

The roles in the purchase

Economic decision maker Approves the purchase and budget, and can veto at the end Champion Wants the project and works for it from the inside Influencer Weighs in without signing: technical, finance or legal Entry point Takes the first contact and decides if it moves up User Uses the solution and is the best source of evidence

The champion makes the case without you in the room

The message per company

An ABM message starts from a fact about the company, not from the product: an announced expansion, a leadership change, an acquisition, a job opening that points to a new project or a regulatory change in the segment.

Each person on the map gets an angle. The CFO wants to hear about cost, risk and return; the CTO, about integration and security; the area manager, about the team's daily work.

The sequence combines channels: LinkedIn for the first contact, email for longer content and WhatsApp once the conversation has started. Each touch brings a new reason to reply.

An example cadence

1 First touch: the dated trigger Why the conversation makes sense now 2 Second touch: the likely pain A hypothesis, stated as a hypothesis 3 Third touch: a case from the same segment What changed at a similar company 4 Fourth touch: another role The user or the influencer, from another angle 5 Last touch: the exit Close politely and leave the door open

A touch that only repeats the ask burns the company

Marketing and sales on the same plan

ABM fails when marketing and sales work different lists. The shared plan puts four decisions in writing:

  1. The list of companies and the tier of each one, decided together.
  2. Who does what: marketing handles content and ads, sales handles direct contact.
  3. What counts as an interest signal and what happens when it shows up.
  4. A short, frequent meeting to review the list, remove companies that left the ICP and add the ones that came in.

ABM metrics

With few companies on the list, counting leads and filled-in forms says little. ABM metrics look inside the list and start with coverage and engagement, before revenue.

MetricWhat it shows
Map coverageAt how many companies on the list the team knows who decides and has already talked to someone
Engagement per companyHow many people at each company replied or accepted a conversation
Meetings with listed companiesHow many turned into a conversation, and at what seniority
Opportunities openedHow many companies on the list turned into a proposal, and of what size
Cycle timeWhether selling to companies on the list moves faster than selling outside it

Where GoSeek fits in ABM

GoSeek covers the part of ABM that takes the most time: getting to know each company on the list. The dossier comes out in 7 to 15 minutes from the CNPJ, with 100 to 500 public sources, and brings a fit score from 0 to 100 against the ICP the organization defines.

On the Advanced plan, the Market Map generates leads by segment (CNAE), region and size and sends the chosen companies to the portfolio. The dossier brings the power map by area and level and, from the Intermediate plan up, the cadence written for the role of the person who receives it, opening through managers and directors, with the C-level from the second week on, as the decision makers. On the Advanced plan, GoSeek sends each reviewed touch from the seller's own email, WhatsApp and LinkedIn; on the other plans, the seller sends it.

Frequently asked questions

What people ask about enterprise ABM in Brazil

What does ABM mean in sales?

ABM stands for account-based marketing, the method in which marketing and sales choose target companies together and treat each one with research, a map of who decides and its own message.

What is the difference between ABM and inbound?

Inbound attracts people who are searching and filters afterward. ABM chooses the companies first and goes to them. Many teams use both, with ABM on the highest-value companies.

How many companies should go on an ABM list?

It depends on the size of the team. Each seller needs to keep the power map and an active conversation going with every company in the one-to-one tier.

Does ABM work for a small company selling to large ones?

Yes. A small team cannot talk to the whole market, and choosing companies well makes up for size.
